ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE
Dr. Freeman is the founder of The Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute
One of the biggest challenges for treating those that are underserved is not necessarily making sure they can afford the therapy, although that is part of it. The larger obstacle goes beyond the medicine. It goes to the deeper issue of overcoming barriers to treatment such as not being able to afford transportation to get there, babysitting services for their children during chemotherapy, a place to stay if they receive treatment away from their home, loss of income due to their illness, language and culture barriers that keep them from understanding their situation and treatment. The hardships they confront are too many to list. This challenge of overcoming barriers when treating the underserved became known as patient navigation.
Successful patient navigation supports those diagnosed with suspicious findings by eliminating barriers to timely screening, treatment, and supportive care of cancer and other chronic diseases. Patient navigation saves lives and improves resolution rates of patients. When implemented at the organizational level within a community, it results in increased efficiencies and improved outcomes. The Ricks Oberoi Foundation is dedicated to providing medically underserved women with the ammunition required to win the battle of their life against breast cancer.
PROVIDE ACADEMIC INTERVENTION FOR AT-RISK YOUTH
NextGen AAA Hockey Program
NHL Hall of Famer Adam Oates working with NextGen AAA players.
As a hockey mom, Dee Dee wanted to take on an issue that would impact her sons. After all, charity begins at home. She founded the NextGen AAA Hockey Program to address the need of access to all regardless of socio-economic status within the sport of ice hockey.
The goal of the program is to promote character development and personal growth both “on and off the ice” and to increase athletic participation for minorities and highlight the importance of academic excellence to these young athletes. To achieve this goal we provide tutoring, SAT/ACT preparation and secondary/college placement advisory counseling. Our program supports the “on-ice” development via participation in our ice hockey travel program as well as funding for participation in our Nation’s leading hockey leagues.
House of Lunares Scholarship Program
Nima wanted to continue giving back to the children of the Nima Oberoi-House of Lunares’ Foundry in India. Her philosophy is simple, the House of Lunares is a real house.
It a house of traditions and craftsmanship that uses honest materials. Most of all, Nima Oberoi-House of Lunares cares about their own -the incredible craftsmen who make it all come together everyday. Since inception, Lunares has a program in place where they pay for their artisans children’s school education. Nima wanted to continue supporting these efforts through our foundation. What started from a girl with a head full of dreams -of success and autonomy- is having an impact on the next generation via providing education.
